Chapter 4

“So. Santa.” Nuri decided not to make an issue of the old man’s total immersion in his role. Eddy had told him in the past about method acting, and maybe this man was of that school. “Where would you like us to drop you?”

“As you’re on your way to Clapham, the common is good for me.”

Nuri frowned to himself. Had he said he was going to Clapham? “Do you live there?”

Santa laughed again. He seemed to find the pair of them very amusing. “Of course not. But that’s where the vehicle should have come down.”

Come down? “You’ve broken down somewhere?”

“Fell out.” Santa chortled again, though with a tinge of embarrassment. “Took a right turn too sharply, I reckon, somewhere over the Wandsworth one-way system.” He shoved the hip flask swiftly back into his pocket, as if pretending it’d never been seen. “It’s been a while since we had a white Christmas in London and I think the flakes at three thousand feet interfered with the sat nav. The old nags can’t see further than their own antlers sometimes. There’ve been a few near misses with light aircraft, I can tell you.”

Nuri didn’t know what else to do except drive, the engine ticking over, the wipers sweeping snow flakes off the windscreen, the sounds of the city muted outside the cab. The old man’s words were identifiably English, but the sentences didn’t make sense. Was he mentally disturbed? He said he’d fallen, maybe he’d hit his head.

“You said… antlers?” Eddy’s voice was weak.

“But God bless GPS,” Santa continued cheerfully. “Tracked them to the common. Obviously it’s a bugger to get the vehicle going without a proper slide off a roof…”

“Obviously,” Eddy found himself murmuring.

“… but I’ve got friends on their way to give me a push off again.”

Nuri tried to catch Eddy’s eye in the mirror. When he did, Eddy rolled his eyes and shook his head very slightly. Nuri suspected the look on Eddy’s face was the one Eddy had used for the most trying children at the party earlier.

“I’d rather drop you at a proper station,” Nuri said. “Or even a bus stop. We can see you on your way safely.”

“Do you need a shelter tonight?” Eddy was obviously trying desperately not to offend, but he didn’t look convinced that this Santa was ever going to be safe, even with their help. “The common can be a bit grim at night, you know. Or is there anyone we can… you know… call on your behalf?”

Santa bellowed with laughter. Seriously, it was enough to make snow scatter off the branches of nearby trees. “You’re a good man, you both are. But I’m perfectly safe on my own. Do you honestly think anyone would attack Santa?”

“I can’t imagine,” Nuri said dryly, but under his breath.

They drove on for a few more miles. Santa started humming a selection of Christmas party hits, and he took several more surreptitious swigs from the hip flask. When he spoke again, it startled them both.
